  1. Google continues to shake up mobile search in its goal to perfect user experience. Earlier this month, they announced that they will extend the reach of Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) to all mobile search engine results. Whereas the original rollout limited AMP results to the “Top Stories” carousel, this update will allow all types of publishers to serve AMP pages within the mobile SERP. However, this extension will not have as much of an impact on organic traffic. Google has explicitly stated that moving to AMP will not necessarily result in a rankings boost. Instead, if a webpage is ranking and has an AMP version available, Google will serve the AMP URL. Recap:…

  2. As you’re no doubt aware, Google finally rolled out its Google 4.0 algorithm update at the end of last week. Penguin is now part of Google’s core algorithm, penalising websites that use various black-hat link schemes to manipulate search rankings. Other important changes include: Penguin data is refreshed in real time, so any changes will be made as soon as the affected page has been recrawled and reindexed. Penguin now devalues spam by adjusting ranking of the offending page, rather than affecting the whole site. So how do these changes affect actual SEO practitioners? I asked a panel of experts and SEW contributors their views on Penguin 4.0, including: …

  3. Brand protection is changing. Are you keeping up? If you have a brand worth protecting, competitors are already bidding on your brand name. Some bid directly on your name, while others will bid on obvious brand-plus derivatives, such as when GEICO bids on phrases like “Progressive insurance” (and vice versa). As you can see for the keyword “geico insurance,” AIS, FreeQuotes365 and Mercury Insurance are aggressively buying that keyword, too. If you have a trademark or brand name that drives search volume, it will be one of your more profitable campaigns. Unfortunately, it is one of the important PPC campaigns for your affiliates, resellers and competitors too.…

While ad fraud has become part of every marketer’s vocabulary, attribution fraud – the practice of gaming outdated attribution models to justify self-serving means – has been mostly ignored up until now. As marketers and media owners shift dollars into digital channels, however, serving ads outside of an attribution model’s measurable capabilities in order to achieve financial benefit has quietly been ramping up in response. Attribution fraud is fast becoming the ad industry’s next big quality headache. Attribution fraud includes everything from retargeting users about to convert to knowingly cookie-bombing users with non-viewable ads. And the costs of attribution …

  5. Last week Metro Bank became the first financial institution to offer a gender neutral option for both its staff and customers. The move was made in response to an interview with a Scottish teenager who couldn’t open a bank account because they didn’t identify as either male or female, which was a required question on the form. Image from Buzzfeed. Metro Bank now offer a title of ‘Mx’ and a gender option of ‘nonbinary’ in addition to the standard ‘male’ or ‘female’ options. While the response to the change has been polarised, these changes are something that will impact marketing data and how we use it going forward. We seem to have accepted that ethnicity,…

  6. Google is adding more store visits data to AdWords distance reporting, available when measuring geographic performance of your ads. At the moment you’re able to view your ads’ performance based on different locations, revealing the places your customers are located and the locations they’re most interested in visiting. But now if you use the location extension you can see a distance report that will show store visits based on how far away people are from your store when they search. To use an example from Google, if your store visit rate is highest within one mile of a store, you could apply targeting around that specific radius. Store visits distance reportin…

  8. In SEO, there’s no shortage of theory and best practices. But experimentation is what really keeps this great industry moving forward. All of today’s best practices came as a result of past experiments – both failures and successes. Everything we do in SEO is an opportunity to learn and improve. That’s why I love doing experiments. While Google may reveal a few bits and pieces of information, they’ll never tell us everything we need to know to evolve our SEO strategies from the ordinary into the realm of unicorns. http://www.wordstream.com/images/unicorn-seo-experiments.jpg Today I’d like to share six mind-blowing SEO experiments we did this year, what we lear…
